For many years I’ve made art using a technique called free-motion machine stitching. I draw with sewing thread, building dense embroideries, contour-line stitcheries, lace objects and collage.
Inspiration is everywhere: in a postcard, a famous painting, or a vintage carpet.
I’m currently drawn to nudes. They’re classic, right? When I view a nude in a work of art I wonder, why is that figure nude? What’s the story? Does the artwork arouse pleasant feelings or uncomfortable ones? Nudes have the power to make us ponder what it means to be human. No wonder they’re classic.
I received a B.S. in art from UW Madison in 1987 and an M.F.A. in fiber art from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1995. I worked as assistant curator of the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection at University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1997 to 2005. I’ve exhibited throughout the U.S. and live in New Glarus, Wisconsin.
